Rendir culto a los dioses y santos es algo presente en la humanidad desde los tiempos más remotos. Si echamos una mirada atrás, la gran mayoría de gente tenía en sus casas esculturas de santos y vírgenes populares para su veneración. Pero esta función de la imaginería religiosa puede verse alterada por el paso del tiempo, el cambio generacional o las modas, y su uso ha quedado reemplazado muchas veces a la pura decoración. La erosión de los años ha desprovisto a estas figuras de todo lo que les sobraba, convirtiéndolas en escultura cruda. Las vestimentas se han destruído, y las esculturas han sufrido mutilaciones, o se han quedado sin policromía. Pero lo más relevante es que han perdido su función original: La idolatría. Es entonces cuando se convierten en rostros anónimos y enigmáticos, en viejos ídolos caídos.

The worship of gods and saints has been present in mankind since ancient times. If we take a look back, the vast majority of people had sculptures of popular saints and virgins in their homes for their veneration. But this function of religious imagery can be altered by the passage of time, generational change or fashions, and its use has often been replaced by pure decoration. The erosion of the years has stripped these figures of everything they had to spare, turning them into crude sculpture. The vestments have been destroyed, and the sculptures have suffered mutilations, or have been left without polychromy. But the most relevant thing is that they have lost their original function: idolatry. It is then when they become anonymous and enigmatic faces, in old fallen idols.
